VORTRAG: From Scaffold to Scaffold: Representations of Punishment during the Revolt of the Netherlands
Vortrag David Freedberg, Pierre Matisse Professor of the History of Art and Director of The Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America (Columbia University NY) im Rahmen der Munich History Lecture
Bruegel’s print of Justitia plays a critical role in the history of representations and concepts of punishment during the second half of the sixteenth century in the Netherlands. Significantly, Bruegel’s work turns out to be dependent on one of the most influential and frequently printed legal textbooks of the sixteenth and early seventeenth century. Its illustrations, which Bruegel certainly knew, have never been properly studied. Its text, upon closer analysis, shows a remarkable degree of reflection on methods and modes of forms of torture and punishment. From this we move on to the representation of extreme forms of torture, particularly in popular books and print culture of the time.
