Richard Biegel
Czech Baroque Architecture in the Mirror of its Publications in 18th–20th Centuries

The baroque architecture in the Bohemian Lands is, without any doubt, one of the most interesting phenomena of European architecture of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The great number of remarkable buildings is a testimony to the fact that it was right here where the architectural ideas and features, closely connected to the European artistic quests and experimentations of that era, were cultivated in a very interesting way.
Because of the inexistence of an appropriate academic background, paired with the absence of the period Czech architectonic literature, this treasure of forms only got discovered through the work of historiographers, historians, and art historians in the course of the following centuries. The essential condition of the full appreciation and sharing of thesebuildings has always been their graphic record. This lecture aims to present the main forms of publication of the baroque architecture in Bohemia, starting with the 18th century’s engravings and plans up to the artistic photographic approach of the 2nd half of the 20th century.
