“The Camera and the Camp: Photography in and around the Gulag”
Images of atrocity have become, in the last decades, one of the central concerns of visual studies and scholarship on photography. Yet many photographs made and circulated in violent conditions elide the violence. Through a sample of the thousands of photographs taken in and around the Gulag, this lecture examines the relationship between the camera and the camp. It asks: what is the function of these seemingly banal images, and can they be read against the grain?
