Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte: Keynote and Roundtable Lucy Bradnock: The Purpose of Art History. Followed by a Roundtable Discussion between Journals

Keynote presentation on the project of Art History in the context of an expanding discipline and a changing research and publishing landscape by Lucy Bradnock (Art History), chaired by Ann-Sophie Lehmann (Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte). Followed by a roundtable discussion on the challenges facing art historical journals with Henry Kaap (kritische berichte), Christine Tauber (Kunstchronik), Andrea Lermer (RIHA Journal), Raphael Beuing (Münchner Jahrbuch der bildenden Kunst), Burcu Dogramaci and Brigitte Sölch (Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte).

The parameters of publishing in art historical journals are in flux. An increasing disciplinary differentiation, Open Access, the medial potential of publishing online, but also problems of funding, mergers of presses, and the Anglification of non-English speaking scientific communities are changing its entire ecosystem. At the same time, the desire for a more inclusive and diverse field calls for a renewed discussion of the gatekeeping function of academic journals.

In her keynote presentation, Lucy Bradnock, Editor of Art History, the scholarly journal of the UK-based Association for Art History, and Dean for Research at The Courtauld Institute of Art, London, will reflect on the project of ‘Art History’ in the context of an expanding discipline and a changing research and publishing landscape. She will outline her editorial vision for the journal, including publishing research that challenges and pushes the boundaries of art history; expanding the journal’s geographical reach; and a self-interrogative approach to its own editorial processes.
The keynote is followed by a roundtable discussion, moderated by Ann-Sophie Lehmann (Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte), among editors of journals facing similar challenges. With Henry Kaap (kritische berichte), Christine Tauber (Kunstchronik), Andrea Lermer (RIHA Journal), and Raphael Beuing (Münchner Jahrbuch der bildenden Kunst) as well as Burcu Dogramaci and Brigitte Sölch (Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte).

Lucy Bradnock is Editor of Art History, and Dean for Research at The Courtauld Institute of Art, London, where she leads the MA course Ecologies in American Art, 1950 to Now. She is author of No More Masterpieces: Modern Art After Artaud (Yale University Press, 2021) and co-editor of Lawrence Alloway: Critic and Curator (Getty, 2015) and Pacific Standard Time: Los Angeles Art, 1945-1980 (Getty 2011). Her writing is also included in art history journals including Art History, Art Journal, Oxford Art Journal, Getty Research Journal, and Journal of the Archives of American Art.
